    Browsers and Edonkey Links: Answers
    • How do I download?

    • None of the links on this site, link to a file on one particular server, but rather points to a file shared by one or more users on the P2P filesharing network, which is accessed via a variety of clients using the ed2k protocol. To download, you must have a compatible client program installed and running.

Practically all references on this site will refer to the following client:

      Emule
      http://www.emule-project.net
There are other clients, such as the now redundant and abandoned edonkey2000 client. This was the official/first client for the network, but was surpassed by emule several years ago. Following 2005 the edonkey2000 project was abandoned, however there are still a few that refuse to give up...
      Official Client
      http://www.edonkey2000.com

There are several other clients that can operate on the ed2k network under various operating systems, for *nix, Mldonkey and aMule seem popular.

    • How do I configure my emule client?

    • Comprehensive help can be found here:
      http://www.emule-project.net/home/perl/help.cgi?l=1
      • After installing, you will most likely need to add some servers to your serverlist. These days, serverlists are downloaded and installed automatically
      • Now start up emule, wait for it to download an updated serverlist and click preferences. If you are using a mod, the preference may vary:

Enter youself a unique username (or you can add your name as http://www.dead-donkey.com if you want ;) ) . This will make it easier for your friends to track you down and share files
      • Next you need to configure your connection:

You can use the wizard if you want but here are the general settings:
        • If you have a 128/64 Kbit connection
          • Download Capacity = 20 , download limit = 16
          • Upload Capacity = 8, upload limit = 6-8 (choose as you see fit)
        • If you have a 512/128 Kbit connection
          • Download Capacity = 72 , download limit = 64
          • Upload Capacity = 12, upload limit = 10-11 (choose as you see fit)
        • If you have a 512/256 Kbit connection
          • Download Capacity = 72 , download limit = 64
          • Upload Capacity = 26, upload limit = 20-26 (choose as you see fit)
        • If you have a 1024/256 Kbit connection
          • Download Capacity = 132 , download limit = 128
          • Upload Capacity = 26, upload limit = 20-26 (choose as you see fiy
      • Now, if your running a firewall or router, you need to map TCP port 4662 to emule, as well as UDP port 4672. Click here for detailed router instructions
      • Set your Max sources per file to 800-300, i recommend keeping default
      • Set your max connections to 600-1000+ (setting this number too high will kill your internet connection making browsing impossible, setting it too low will mean that you won't be able to download many files at once. It also depends on what your machine can take. I set this number to 1000, to ensure that i get plenty of sources and don't kill my internet connection)
      • Next you need to configure your server settings:
      • Now you can set up your temp, incoming and shared directories:

Firstly, the incoming files location is where the downloads will go once they have completed. Set this directory to a suitable place. Similarly, the Temp files are the files to which data is stored as they are being downloaded. You need a location with enough space to download. Finally, set up some shared directories, checking a box next to a suitable directory. DO NOT share system files, or stupid locations. This slows down connections to servers. Simply share a couple of decent movies you have downloaded.
      • The rest of the options are up to you. If your worried about your privacy, check it so only your friends can see your share files

    • I can't get on any servers!

    • There are one of two possibilities, firstly if you have no servers listed then you need to attain a new serverlist, for example, this one here.

If you have servers on your list but can not connect, check your port forwarding and firewall settings.

    • How do I post a share?

      • Load up emule, go to preferences and then directories. Share the directories with your files in.
      • Go to your shared folder tab, and then wait for the files to hash. Click reload to ensure that you are hashing. This may take a minute or two, but eventually the file you are looking for will be shared
      • Click second button on the the file and give the file release priority. If your emule version supports powersharing, repeat and add powersharing. This will enable people to get through your shares and download.
      • Now click second button on the file again, and go down to "Copy ed2k link to clipboard (HTML)". NOTE: in new emule clients you have to right click, then go to "Show ed2k links", and then hit "copy to clipboard"
      • Now simply post the link into a forum without any modification...
        League.of.Gentlemen.3x01.[Spud,Dual,dead-donkey.com].avi

    • What do the red / blue / black bits mean?

      • RED = Can not locate file for this part
      • BLUE = Source available. The darker the blue, the more sources available
      • BLACK = Downloaded part
      • GREEN = Download complete
      • YELLOW / GREY = Currently downloading

    • Why do I see HHAH in people's names?

    • There are two reasons why some people have opted to use this, firstly is identification and secondly is a remnant of an old emule 'community' feature which aimed at sharing files more quickly amongst communities and therefore people who were likely to keep files shared and spread. Whilst the latter reason is now of lesser significance, the first is still a main reason that many members of this community have opted to add HHAH to their name. In teh case of everything horror, the community tag is HHAH

Prefixing HHAH before your name is the preferred way of doing this, this way username lists can be ordered and lots of people who are kown can be found that way and you can give them friend slots in emule. HHAH username, has this advantage, but username [HHAH] does not, as this would be listed under U instead of H. Many mods have identification for these clients, by going into the advanced options and adding the string to the option. The option is normally under "extended settings", "mod preferences" or under another tab to similar effect, in the case of sivka it is under "sivka preferences". In the community string box enter HHAH, to use it.

Why HHAH? Well people who have been with the site will know that before registering the domain name dead-donkey, the site was known as Horror Has A Home many, many years ago. HHAH as a reference to the site has stuck, even though the url has changed.

    • Windows XP firewall, good or bad?

    • IMPORTANT: All XP users, Internal Firewall Must be disabled. This useless 'feature' stops your mule from communicating with any other computer. It *must* be deleted. To do so, click second button on Network Neighbourhood, go to properties. Now locate your internet connection. On this click second button>properties. Go to the last tab, and uncheck the first check box. This will disable the firewall.

Alternatively, if you have a mod that supports uPnP or XP firewall compatability, you can set it to automatically the required ports.

If your worried about not having a firewall don't be, winxp's firewall is particularly lousy, your better off with a software firewall like kerio (emule search for it). Avoid ZoneAlarm, it causes no end of problems.

    • I have a router/firewall, what ports need opening?

    • This excellent information covers it all:
      Router/Firewall FAQ
      ---
The following list shows the ports used by eMule when using it's default settings. If you change anything in Preferences -> Connection you will have to take the changes into account when configuring your firewall or router.
      1) Local Port: 4662
      Remote Port: any
      Protocol: TCP
      Direction: incoming
Purpose: Client Port / Connections from other clients, Client to Client Source Exchange
Note: You can change this port in Preferences -> Connection -> Client Port This port has to be forwarded in a router. Changing this port in Preferences you must also change the forwarding in the router

      2) Local Port: any
      Remote Port: 4662
      Protocol: TCP
      Direction: outgoing
Purpose: Client Port / Connections to other clients, Client to Client Source Exchange
Note: 4662 is the default port, but other clients may have different settings. Change the remote port to any when configuring a firewall

      3) Local Port: 4672
      Remote Port: any
      Protocol: UDP
      Direction: incoming
Purpose: Clients source asking / extended eMule protocol, Queue Rating, File Reask Ping
Note: This port has to be forwarded in a router. Changing this port in Preferences you must also change the forwarding in the router. If you are not able to forward this port check the disable box in Preferences -> Connection -> UDP Port

      4) Local Port: any
      Remote Port: 4672
      Protocol: UDP
      Direction: outgoing
Purpose: Clients source asking / extended eMule protocol, Queue Rating, File Reask Ping
Note: 4672 is the default port, but other clients may have different settings. Change the remote port to any when configuring a firewall

      5) Local Port: any
      Remote Port: 4661
      Protocol: TCP
      Direction: outgoing
      Purpose: Connection to server
Note: 4661 is the default port of a server. Many server use different ports. Configuring a firewall the remote port again changes to any.
      6) Local Port: any
      Remote Port: 4665
      Protocol: UDP
      Direction: outgoing / (incoming)
Purpose: Source asking on servers , searching for files
Note: Servers using the default port 4661 TCP (see #5) automatically set their port for source asking to 4665 UDP. If a server uses a different port in #5 the corresponding UDP port is set to [Connection Port + 4]. For firewalls the remote port here is any.
UDP is a connectionless protocol, i.e. unlike TCP no connection is kept alive. If a server answers e.g. a source request this answer is treated as a new connection. All commonly used routers and firewalls in the home computer sector perform an UDP connection tracking therefore it is not necessary to specify an incoming port for UDP in the router's or firewall's configuration. More complex networks, especially if proxy servers are used, may require to define this local port to configure the router / firewall / proxy accordingly or to disable it at all if it is not possible to control them. It is possible to set this port in Preferences -> Preferences.ini but there is usually no need to change it.

      7) Local Port: 4711
      Remote Port: any
      Protocol: TCP
      Direction: incoming
      Purpose: Web Interface
Note: This is the default port for the web interface. When using a router this port has to be forwarded or no connection to the web interface will be possible.

    • When I click a link I get an error.

    • None of the links on this site link to a file on one particular server, but rather points to a file shared by one or more users on the P2P filesharing network, Edonkey2000. To download, you must have this program installed and running: Official Client http://www.edonkey2000.com Emule http://www.emule-project.net

    • I am using Opera, how can I get clickable links?

      • You need to add the following code to your section entitled [USER PREFS] in your OperaDef6.ini file that is in your opera directory:

        TrustedExternalURLProtocols=ed2k

      • Opera 7.20+ requires you to add this in the preferences area now.

        File > Preferences > Programs & Paths > Add

        Enter ed2k as the Protocol

Your action should point to the location of your edonkey client's executable.

      • The links should now be clickable after a restart of opera
