15.09.12 - Videodrome remake

Looks like Videodrome is setup to be another title on the sacrificial alter to the remake gods
And yet, today Deadline reports that Adam Berg, who has directed popular commercials, is on board to helm a remake of David Cronenberg‘s classic film. Ehren Kruger, who’s been attached to the project since 2009 and is the screenwriter behind such masterpieces as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Reindeer Games, scripted the remake.

29.12.10 - Total Recall remake to start lensing in March

Pretty certain what will amount to an inferior Candian remake is on its way...
It looks like Columbia Pictures is moving forward with their Total Recall reboot as it appears it'll be headed to Toronto for a late March 2011 shoot, writes Heat Vision. The modern remake of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzennegar-starring sci-fi flick looks set to shoot in the city’s giant Pinewood Toronto Studios, the Toronto Star newspaper reported Thursday. The booking follows Pinewood’s North American beach-head receiving a $34.5 million loan from the Ontario government to lure big budget movie and TV shoots to the city. Len Wiseman (Underworld) will direct Total Recall based on a script by Kurt Wimmer, with Neal H. Moritz producing through his Original Film banner. The project, based on the Philip K. Dick story, portrays a man haunted by a recurring dream of rocketing to Mars.

09.11.10 - The Man Who Saw Frankenstein Cry (Docu)

As it can be seen in his home letter box, Jacinto Molina was two people at the same time. On one hand, he was the furrier’s son from Postas street in Madrid and the young man who almost went to Rome and Tokyo Olympic Games. On the other hand, Paul Naschy, the myth who signed autographs for hours in New York and Los Angeles and the one who received a call from Steven Spielberg asking him for copies of his films.

Hosted by the american director and screenwriter Mick Garris (Masters of Horror, The Stand, The Shining), THE MAN WHO SAW FRANKENSTEIN CRY revises the career of both aspects, intermingling them in order to explain how Paul Naschy figure would have never existed without the thousands of anecdotes that make up Jacinto Molina’s biography. For this, part of his personal photographic archive was recovered and essential places of his life will be visited, as for example the town of Mazcuerras in Cantabria, where he lived during some years of the Spanish Civil War, or Burgos, where part of his imaginary was moulded, imaginary that was expressed in his cinema, and also it’s the place where he is buried nowadays; or his own house where he received fake bomb parcels from extreme right ideology supporters for being part of films such as Comando Txikia or El Francotirador. At the same time, cinema friends as Joe Dante, John Landis, Jordi Grau or Nacho Cerdá talk about their experiences with Naschy and dissect his career, telling anecdotes and less known periods of the filmmaker’s life.

THE MAN WHO SAW FRANKENSTEIN CRY, apart from a large amount of photographic material and private recordings of Paul Naschy’s life, includes clips and extracts of the following films: Night of the Werewolf; The Mark of the Wolfman aka Frankenstein's Bloody Terror; The beast and the magic sword; Night of the Howling Beast; The Mummy's Revenge; El caminante; Inquisition; Panic Beats; El último Kamikaze; Cannibal Killers - Human Beast; Night of the Werewolf; House of Psychotic Women; Exorcism; A Dragonfly for Each Corpse; Hunchback of the Morgue; Horror Rises from the Tomb; Rojo Sangre; Curse of the Devil aka Return of the Werewolf; Vengeance of the Zombies; The Valdemar Heritage; The Forbidden Shadow; O Apóstolo.

25.06.10 - The first Hammer film to hit Blu-Ray
On 26 August 2010 Eureka will issue Freddie Francis' Paranoiac (1963) on DVD and Blu-ray, marking the first Hammer movie to make the transition to Blu-ray and hopefully the first of a package of other Hammer titles heading this way from Eureka.

A forgotten gem from the legendary Hammer Studios, available for the first time on home video in the UK, this sinister classic spins a gruesome web of unhappy families. It is three weeks before the Ashby siblings Simon (Oliver Reed), a brutish alcoholic, and Eleanor (Janette Scott), a nervous wreck, are to come into their late parents' inheritance. While Simon plans to have his sister certified insane and locked away, Eleanor keeps seeing the lurking figure of their long-dead brother Tony around the estate. Who or what is this apparition, and does he threaten to reveal skeletons in the closet (and elsewhere)?

A massively entertaining horror treat in the best English Gothic tradition, Paranoiac features a superbly oily lead performance from a young Oliver Reed, stunning black & white Cinemascope photography, an ingenious script by Jimmy Sangster, and gripping direction by the great Freddie Francis.

Featuring legendary actor Oliver Reed (Gladiator, The Devils, Women in Love), Paranoiac is classic British gothic horror, of the same era as The Innocents, Repulsion, The Haunting, Dracula, These Are The Damned.

One of the very first video compilations of classic horror and exploitation trailers is finally making its way to DVD. MAD RON’S PREVUES FROM HELL, which originally hit VHS way back in 1987, is set to make its disc debut September 14.
One of the very first video compilations of classic horror and exploitation trailers is finally making its way to DVD. MAD RON’S PREVUES FROM HELL, which originally hit VHS way back in 1987, is set to make its disc debut September 14.

Virgil Films—whose president, Joe Amodei, was one of the executive producers and can be seen in a small role—will release the DVD. In addition to showcasing coming attractions for such classics as NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, I DRINK YOUR BLOOD and 44 others, PREVUES FROM HELL surrounds them with an actual storyline involving “Mad Ron” and an audience of zombies, introduced by ventriloquist Nick Pawlow and his undead pal “Happy.” Directed by Jim Monaco, these sequences feature makeup FX by Jordu Schell (who went on to such major genre features as THE MIST, ALIENS VS. PREDATOR—REQUIEM, CLOVERFIELD and AVATAR) and Jay Kushwara.

“Horror fans fall into a different sector than most film enthusiasts; there is much more intensity and infatuation than any other genre,” says Amodei. “This compilation does not skimp on blood, gore and thrills; it emphasizes everything that is great about horror films. It’s campy and it’s fun, and it makes a perfect party DVD for the not-too-squeamish.” You can see MAD RON’S Facebook page here.

26.12.09 - Fat cats of Hollywood are fatter than ever
2009 a record year at the box office
With all this talk of recession and piracy, you’d think 2009 would have been a bad year for Hollywood and the movie industry. Not so, with the latest figures showing a bumper year at the box office, with records both domestically and internationally.

According to Reuters, domestic box office takings are expected to pass the $10 billion mark for the first time ever. This would obviously set a new record, passing the previous record of $9.7 billion set in 2007.

Outside of North America, figures are expected to top $15 billion, well above last year’s sum of $14.3 billion. The busy Christmas schedule is expected to give these figures a final push to even greater highs.

Warner Bros. have had the best year, with big-hitters such as Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and The Hangover bringing in $1.9 billion in ticket sales, which equated to a 19.6% market share.

However, Paramount is the most consistent studio, making on average $112 million per film, with Warners only managing $72.6m per film.

19.12.09 - Mara (2010)

The folks over at Filmkoncept Scandinavia just sent FANGORIA the first poster for their new film MARA starring Angelica Jansson (PLAYBOY). The film is expected to be finished with post in February, and while we await the finished project, take a peek at the poster, synopsis, photos, and an early teaser below the jump.
Jenny (Angelica Jansson) is a young woman with a dark past. During her childhood she witnessed something terrifying that scarred her for life. Now, ten years later years later, Jenny has created a new life of her own.In the last days of summer, in the deep, dark woods of Sweden, Jenny and four friends gather in a cozy cottage for a weekend of partying, fun and relaxation. This abruptly ends when Jenny wakes up in the morning to find herself alone in the cottage.

Thinking that her friends are playing a prank on her she goes searching for them- but they are gone without a trace. Yet, where would they go in the middle of the woods? And why is the car still parked out front? Jenny spends a torturous day waiting for her friends to return. As darkness once again engulfs the cottage, Jenny must face the fact that she has been left alone. In the darkness. In the middle of nowhere. Or has she? Is she really all alone? No. SomeTHING is out there in the woods. A ghost, perhaps. Or a creature. Or somebody from Jenny's frightening past.As the night grows darker, shadowy figures haunt the cottage. Unrecognizable voices whisper Jenny's name. Nightmares come to life. Is Jenny losing her mind? Evil closes in as the story reaches its blood-soaked, twisted conclusion. MARA. A psychological horror-thriller written, produced and directed by Fredrik Hedberg, Jacob Kondrup and Åke Gustavsson.

Fear your past. Dread your future.

13.12.09 - Slime City Massacre (2010)

The brain is back!

Gregory Lamberson is just about ready to unleash Slime City Massacre on the unsuspecting world. The film has been quite a while in the making, as it's the followup to 1988's Slime City. They've just unveiled the poster for the sequel.

Artist Stephan Romano (behind the infamous Black Devil Doll Poster) worked on this and definitely captured the retro feel they're going for with the film.

The story is set in the ruins of midtown Manhattan seven years after a dirty bomb blows up in the financial district. The neighborhood (now known as Slime City) is evacuated, but that doesn't stop the homeless from scavenging the area. Four squatters looking for food inside a soup kitchen discover a supply of wine and yogurt, which they immediately consume and are transformed into slime creatures. Worse than that, they're possessed by the spirits of those who died in the previous film!

The original still holds up as a really fun film, making for a great "Melting NYC" double-feature with the classic Street Trash. Really can't wait to see what they've done this time... and how much more disgusting they could possibly make it.

Slime City vets Robert C. Sabin, Mary Bogle, T.J. Merrick, and Dick Biel. Brooke Lewis and Tommy Sweeney all return to their roles, and Debbie Rochon (Tromeo and Juliet) and Lee Perkins (KatieBird *Certifiable Crazy Person) appear as well.

The film will premiere at the Beloit International Film Festival and start making the festival rounds starting next February. For more on the film and the rest of the awesome Mr. Lamberson's work check out his official site.

06.11.09 - Atomic Brain Invasion
Scorpio Film Releasing and director Richard Griffin are currently in the midst of their latest production, the ’50s genre homage ATOMIC BRAIN INVASION. Scripted by Guy Benoit and Griffin, who sent over a couple of advance “lobby cards” (see below) and produced by Ted Marr, the movie is currently two weeks away from finishing up principal photography.

As opposed to Griffin’s previous horrific/violent fare (including NUN OF THAT, hitting DVD in January), ATOMIC BRAIN INVASION will, in the spirit of its inspirations, be more of a PG-level affair. “Not only do I want it to look and sound like it was made in 1957,” Griffin tells Fango, “but I also want it to be free of all the blood, profanity and nudity of modern horror films. It’s wonderful to have a horror movie that people of all ages can enjoy, much like the classic creature features I watched on television as a child.”

ATOMIC BRAIN’s scenario involves a bunch of misfit high-schoolers who must band together to stop an army of brain creatures from outer space that intend to kidnap Elvis Presley when he performs in a small New England town. In keeping with the more ambitious ’50s sci-fi fare, this movie will also address Cold War paranoia and racial issues of the era. The cast, which includes a number of Scorpio regulars, consists of Sarah Nicklin, David Lavallee Jr., Michael Reed, Rich Tretheway, Brandon Luis Aponte, Alexandra Cipolla, David Erin Wilson, Ruth Sullivan, Colin Carlton, Alexander Lewis, Andre Boudreau and Daniel Lee White.

“The wonderful challenge of making this movie has been creating a period film on less than used-car prices,” Marr says. “We’ve had everything from beautiful vintage cars and fantastic costumes to great old-fashioned practical monster effects, created by artists Chris Russell and Alan August.” The filmmakers plan to premiere ATOMIC BRAIN INVASION next summer; you can see Scorpio’s official website here.

Euro-trashed! Euro-smashed! Euro-slashed!
Transylmania revolves around a motley group of college students embark on a semester at Razvan University. Located deep in the heart of the "cursed land" of Transylvania in a centuries-old castle, Razvan isn’t your typical institution of higher learning – and the black leather-clad professors, three-foot-tall dean, instruction in crucifix-wielding, and topless vampiresses lurking in dark corners are just the start. It seems Castle Razvan was overtaken by a band of vampires led by the feared Vampire King Radu in the dark ages who's come back to reclaim it.
