10.11.07 - Spider Baby remake
Oh dear...
Quote:
It's been on the remake block for years now, a new version of Spider Baby, which looked like it was never going to happen. I'm a huge fan of Sid Haig's debut, directed by Jack Hill, so I was pretty excited for the remake. Spider Baby is the first of its kind and is said to have inspired films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and House of 1000 Corpses. So why am I so disappointed?

Normally I would be behind a remake to SPIDER BABY all the way, but today Fangoria received word that Jeff Broadstreet is attached to direct off a script by Robert Valding.

IF you've seen the duos NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 3D then you'll fully understand why I'm dreading this remake. The NOTLD remake not only was a terrible film but completely missed the point of the original. I fear that the same is going to happen with this remake, although I'm always open to seeing improvement (see Uwe Boll). If the duo can produce a kickass remake, I'd be ecstatic... the budget is ranging from $2-3 million, which is a lot.

The magazine also reports that "Haig is being courted to return for the update (to take over the role of family caretaker Bruno, originally essayed by Chaney), with Hill on board as executive producer and director Jeff Broadstreet (who previously teamed with Haig on NIGHT OF THE LIVING 3D) at the helm."

They also chatted with Broadstreet who explains, "We’re going to stick very closely to the basic story of the original film, and at the same time dig deeper into the backstory of the inbred Merrye family," he continues talking about how the script, "expands on the themes of unconditional love, and also the story elements of cannibalism and the mutant relatives in the basement. But this isn’t going to be the TEXAS CHAINSAW family, and it’s not going to be a monster movie."

Watch for more news as it comes in and cross your fingers that the duo learned from their mistakes making NOTLD 3D.
