08.06.09 - Swedish Pirate Party headed to European Parliament
This may sound ridiculous, but is actually true. There is a party in Sweden that stands on the side of p2p piracy. In yesterday's elections they managed to get enough votes to send one representative into the European Parliament.

Click here for the official results of the Swedish EP voting: https://www.val.se/val/ep2009/valnatt/rike/index.html
Quote:
Sweden's pro-file sharing Pirate Party is on its way to Brussels having secured more than 7 percent of the country's votes in the European Parliament elections, according to early exit polls.

According to "The Local" they are trying to establish themselves in other European countries as well. I think their success shows, that young people have enough of the lying and false promises made by the other parties. As they don't care about the actual needs of people and only stand in for the interest of multinational companies, their words have lost their reliability. Especially the liberal and social democratic parties should be ashamed of themselves.

I am shocked that only 1/3 of European citizens actually care about who represents their country in the EU. While there might be only little chance to actually have something to say in Bruxelles, in a democratic system voting is your only opportunity to have your say considering the future of your country. So you better move your lazy asses next time folks! Or you are condemned to bitch about the result not soothing your imagination.

I crowed about this over at FH too, and your news article drives home the point: advocating "piracy" as "piracy" isn't going to get very far (you refer to them as supporting "p2p piracy"). in fact, I think it will prove to be counter-productive. rhetorically speaking (public relations, etc.) it throws out the window any notion of justice or that party members are actually law abiding citizens. I mean...if the point is to sway people, that name is ridiculously bad. I haven't even pursued the issue at all outside of my regular p2p forums, and already they're being described as "pro-piracy." that's not good. it's "cool," but it's not good. it's going to polarize the issue. the majority of people who don't have an opinion need only look at the name and say..."well yeah. I'm not voting for piracy." it's absurd. even the Republican and Democrats in the US have enough sense to mask their greedy habits behind a facade of rhetoric and half-assed "measures."

I wonder what the party really stands for. I mean "supporting piracy" is can't be everything one is interested in.
