Comments:
Poor and uneffective, slow horror movie. I felt this one could have been a lot better than what it was, and in the end the low rating is truely a reflection of the lack of horror and its slow moving nature. Shame really.
"Dr. Robert Vern (Robert Foxworth), an idealistic doctor, travels to upstate Maine at the request of a friend, bringing his wife Maggie (Talia Shire), a classical musician. There they discover that an ignorant paper company has polluted the environment and turned animals into mutants with methylmercury poisoning.
"Prophecy" is actually very light on true horror, saving what passes for its "good stuff" until well past the halfway point. It's very much a horror movie with an agenda, and we get a lot of self-righteous posing from Foxworth and pointed dialog. Okay, okay, I got the message - they didn't have to hammer me over the head with it. A huge mutant bear pops up now and then and chases all the principal characters for its big finish. This thing is ugly, gory - yet unconvincing. Not a top-notch special effect.
Acting was tolerable, although I, like others, have to question the casting of Armand Assante as a Native American.
The finale really isn't half bad, but it can't save the film, unfortunately. I was a little put off by the almost complete darkness in the night-time scenes - I could barely see anything at times.
At the very least, there is some good scenery, and it is well photographed."
